Description
This is the sturdiest shelf we make, mainly because it has a bigger frame, braces at each junction, and hundreds of rivets. I named it the Ironworker Bookshelf in honor of the old time ironworkers who, back in the day, built beautiful things with pride.
We build these in 3 foot wide sections.
Height is 90″ standard.
Aged sugar pine shelves with a walnut stain.
The 108″ wide shelf is made of three 3 foot wide sections that bolt together, so some assembly is required (20 minutes approximately). We build this larger shelf with a 20″ deep bottom console base and 14″ upper shelves, or with all 14″ deep shelves.
Smaller units available with casters or legs. 108″ units not available with casters.
36″ models have 5 shelves, 108″ console model has 6 shelves, 108″ non-console model has 7 shelves. This includes top and bottom shelf.
Pair with the Casegood No. 4 for a cohesive industrial statement across steel and hardwood.
Frequently Asked Questions
What finish options are available for the steel?+
Natural patina is shown as standard. Black patina and custom hand-applied paint finishes are available — colors are developed in conversation with you and applied by hand for depth and character. Finish direction is part of the commission process.
What wood species are available?+
Standard species are walnut, oak, mahogany, and cherry. All tops are solid, premium, sustainably sourced hardwood, hand-selected for figure and grain. Other species are available on request and finalized during your commission conversation.
Can I configure the size and number of shelves?+
Yes — bay count, overall width, height, shelf depth, and shelf count are all adjustable. We build to your wall and room; dimensions are finalized during the commission conversation.
Does the shelf require wall-anchoring?+
Yes — wall-anchoring is required. Pre-drilled holes are included for securing to the wall. Appropriate fasteners depend on your wall material and are not included.
What is the lead time?+
Lead times are typically 12 weeks or more from deposit, depending on configuration. Your specific timeline is confirmed at the start of your commission.
How is it delivered?+
Standard delivery is freight curbside. White glove service — inside placement, unpacking, and full assembly — is available; delivery method is confirmed during your commission conversation.
I’ve seen something that looks exactly like this on another site. Is it the same piece?+
No. Vintage Industrial designs have been copied extensively since 2009, primarily by Asian manufacturers selling through direct-from-China storefronts. The pieces look similar in photos but weigh a quarter of what ours do — they’re not designed to last, they’re designed to sell at a cheap price. Vintage Industrial sells direct only, through retro.net. We have no other sales channels, no third-party retailers, no Amazon storefront. If you’re seeing something like this anywhere else, it’s a counterfeit. Every Vintage Industrial piece is built to order in our Chicago shop by hand, from hot-rolled steel and solid hardwood, with a 12+ week lead time.

“I am very happy I stumbled upon the website for Greg Hankerson & Vintage Industrial, LLC. I love the piece Greg did for my New York apartment and I recommend him to anyone for his craftsmanship.”
