Flat Iron Desk

Contact us for pricing

The Flat Iron Desk takes its cues from French industrial design and solves a specific problem: a desk that works in a smaller space and folds flat for storage when the room demands it. The frame is fabricated from hot-rolled steel, hand-selected for grain and character — precision-engineered for a piece this minimal to carry that kind of rigidity. Built to order in virtually any size or finish.

ADA Compliant: The Flat Iron Desk can be configured to meet ADA compliance requirements.

Description

The Flat Iron Desk is the answer to a question most furniture ignores: what if the desk could disappear when the room needed the space back? The frame folds flat — a fully functional desk one moment, a wall-hung panel the next. The engineering required to make that work at this material standard is not trivial. The frame is fabricated from hot-rolled steel, hand-selected for grain and character, precision-engineered to hold its geometry through repeated use.

The design draws on French industrial references — geometric, minimal, and built without ornament. The piece shown is one configuration; top dimensions, finish, and material are all adjustable and finalized during your commission conversation. All hardwood tops include a breadboard end on both sides to prevent seasonal movement.

Pair with one of our custom conference tables to complete the workspace with consistent materials and finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this suitable for daily use?+
Yes. The steel frame is engineered to industrial tolerances. Restaurant-grade sealer finishes every top for all-day, everyday use.
How does the fold-flat mechanism work?+
The frame is hinged to fold flat against a wall for storage, then unfolds and locks into a rigid desk configuration. The locking mechanism is confirmed during your commission conversation.
What top options are available?+
Hardwood, steel, and other top materials are available. Species and finish are finalized during your commission conversation.
Can I specify the size?+
Yes — built to order in virtually any size. Dimensions are finalized during your commission conversation.
What is the lead time?+
Lead times are typically 12 weeks or more from deposit. Your specific timeline is confirmed at the start of your commission.
How is it delivered?+
Standard delivery is freight curbside. White glove service is available and confirmed during your commission conversation.
I’ve seen something that looks exactly like this on another site. Is it the same piece?+
No. Vintage Industrial designs have been copied extensively since 2009, primarily by Asian manufacturers selling through direct-from-China storefronts. The pieces look similar in photos but weigh a quarter of what ours do — they’re not designed to last, they’re designed to sell at a cheap price. Vintage Industrial sells direct only, through retro.net. We have no other sales channels, no third-party retailers, no Amazon storefront. If you’re seeing something like this anywhere else, it’s a counterfeit. Every Vintage Industrial piece is built to order in our Chicago shop by hand, from hot-rolled steel and solid hardwood, with a 12+ week lead time.
