Boxcar Ellis Wall Unit

Contact us for pricing

A large-scale wall unit built on the bones of the Ellis Boxcar console — same hot-rolled steel frame, same hand-applied molding and trim, same cast casters. Configured as a modular system: individual components slide together to form the unit you want, at the scale you want. Door inserts in woven wire mesh, glass, or solid steel panels. Wood shelves in mahogany, white oak, walnut, or maple — adjustable. Interior LED lighting available. Every finish, every component, every dimension is yours to define.

Description

The Boxcar Ellis Wall Unit begins where the Ellis Boxcar console leaves off. The same architectural DNA — hot-rolled steel frame, hand-formed molding and trim, period-correct hinges, solid-roll casters, and a toe kick that keeps the base grounded — now scaled up and made modular. Components slide and connect to build out the wall unit you have in mind, not a configuration decided by a catalog.

Door inserts are selected at commission: woven wire mesh for an open industrial texture, glass panels for display, or solid steel for a more closed, architectural feel. Steel finishes include natural steel, blackened steel, and aged paint finishes — each one distinct, each applied by hand. The unit can also be painted, with custom color matching available.

Wood shelves and tops are hand-selected solid hardwood — mahogany, white oak, walnut, or maple. Shelves are adjustable. Steel shelving is also available for a fully monolithic look. Interior LED lighting can be integrated into any configuration for display or task illumination.

This is a fully configurable, fully customizable piece. Mix and match door styles, insert materials, shelf materials, and finish combinations to build the wall unit your space requires.

The 2-Inch Rule

When measuring for a wall unit of this scale, always allow for 2 inches of breathing room on the top and sides. This accounts for installation clearance and any variance in floor and ceiling leveling — standard practice for a built-in of this mass and precision.

Structural Integrity & Weight Distribution

A full-scale steel wall unit of this construction is a substantial architectural element. The Boxcar Ellis is engineered to distribute its weight across standard commercial and residential flooring — no point-loading, no concentrated stress. If your project involves a specific structural constraint or load requirement, bring it to the commission conversation and we will engineer accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What door insert options are available?+
Door inserts are available in woven wire mesh, glass panels, or solid steel. Each can be mixed within a single unit — for example, glass uppers and mesh lowers — depending on your configuration.
Can I mix different shelf materials in one unit?+
Yes. Shelf materials — mahogany, white oak, walnut, maple, or steel — can be mixed across sections of the same unit. This is confirmed during your commission conversation.
What steel finishes are available?+
Natural steel, blackened steel, and aged paint finishes are standard. Custom paint finishes and color matching are available — finish samples provided on request.
Can LED lighting be added?+
Yes. Interior LED lighting can be integrated into any configuration — useful for display sections or task illumination inside cabinet sections. Wiring and placement are confirmed during commission.
How does the modular system work?+
The wall unit is built from individual components — base sections, cabinet sections, open shelf sections — that slide and connect to form your configuration. You decide the layout, and we build each component to fit together precisely.
Will this unit work with my flooring?+
The Boxcar Ellis is engineered to distribute weight evenly across standard commercial and residential flooring. If you have a specific structural concern — concrete slab, raised subfloor, or load-bearing requirements — bring it to your commission conversation and we will engineer accordingly.
What is the lead time?+
Lead time is 12 or more weeks from commission confirmation. Delivery method — freight curbside or white glove inside placement and assembly — is confirmed during your commission conversation.
I’ve seen something that looks exactly like this on another site. Is it the same piece?+
No. Vintage Industrial designs have been copied extensively since 2009, primarily by Asian manufacturers selling through direct-from-China storefronts. The pieces look similar in photos but weigh a quarter of what ours do — they’re not designed to last, they’re designed to sell at a cheap price. Vintage Industrial sells direct only, through retro.net. We have no other sales channels, no third-party retailers, no Amazon storefront. If you’re seeing something like this anywhere else, it’s a counterfeit. Every Vintage Industrial piece is built to order in our Chicago shop by hand, from hot-rolled steel and solid hardwood, with a 12+ week lead time.
