I Beam Dining Table

Contact us for pricing

Designed by Greg Hankerson in 2011 and first built in his Phoenix garage — the I-Beam Dining Table takes its structural vocabulary directly from the construction industry. The base is fabricated from hot-rolled steel I-beams, riveted and welded into a foundation that reads like exposed building infrastructure. It’s one of the most copied designs in industrial furniture, and one of the most poorly executed by those who’ve tried. The difference is in the steel gauge, the rivet work, and the breadboard-ended solid hardwood top — details that don’t survive cost-cutting.

Works equally well as a dining table or conference table. Available in just about any size, with solid hardwood or plate steel tops in your choice of species and finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the history behind the I-Beam design?+
Greg Hankerson designed the I-Beam Dining Table in 2011 and built the first ones in his Phoenix garage. The concept was straightforward: take the structural steel language of construction — I-beams, rivets, raw metal — and build a dining table that looks like it belongs in the building, not just the room. It became one of the most copied designs in industrial furniture. The copies exist. They don’t hold up.
Is this table suitable for daily use?+
Yes. Both the top and base are finished with a restaurant-grade sealer built for all-day, everyday use. The steel base is engineered to industrial tolerances, a grade above both commercial and residential furniture. These aren’t display pieces — they’re built for the factory floor, refined for the room.
Can it be used as a conference table?+
Yes — the I-Beam is built to the same structural standard as our dedicated conference tables and works equally well in boardrooms, private dining rooms, and executive offices. Standard sizes seat 8–12. Custom lengths are available for larger configurations.
What wood species are available?+
Standard species are walnut, oak, mahogany, and cherry. All tops are solid, premium, sustainably sourced hardwood, hand-selected for figure and grain. Plate steel tops are also available. Species and top material are finalized during your commission conversation.
What steel finish options are available?+
Natural steel, blackened steel, and aged paint finish are standard. Custom paint and color matching are available — finalized during your commission conversation.
Can I specify the table size and seating capacity?+
Yes — length, width, and height are all adjustable to your space and seating requirements. Standard sizes are 96″ × 40″ and 120″ × 48″. Custom dimensions are finalized during your commission conversation.
What edge profiles are available?+
Live edge, straight, beveled, and other profiles are available. All solid hardwood tops include breadboard ends to prevent warping. Edge style is selected during your commission conversation.
I’ve seen something that looks exactly like this on another site. Is it the same piece?+
No. The I-Beam design has been copied extensively since 2011. The copies use thinner steel, skip the rivet work, and use veneer or MDF tops instead of solid hardwood. The difference is visible in photos and obvious in person. Vintage Industrial sells direct only, through retro.net — no third-party retailers, no Amazon storefront. Every piece is built to order in our Chicago shop with a 12+ week lead time.
What is the lead time?+
Lead times are typically 12 weeks or more from deposit, depending on configuration. Your specific timeline is confirmed at the start of your commission.
How is it delivered?+
Standard delivery is freight curbside. White glove service — inside placement, unpacking, and full assembly — is available; delivery method is confirmed during your commission conversation.
