Crank Tables

Height-Adjustable Crank Tables, Built to Last a Lifetime

A crank table is not an office accessory. It is a precision-engineered piece of furniture — a capital investment in the way you work, meet, and live. At Vintage Industrial, every crank table is handcrafted in hot-rolled steel, hand-selected for grain and character, and paired with solid, sustainable hardwood chosen for its figure and density. The mechanism is built to industrial tolerances. The table is built to be passed down.

Height-adjustable furniture has become ubiquitous. Most of it is disposable. Ours is not. The crank column on a Vintage Industrial table is a structural element — not a retrofit — integrated into the base from the first weld. It raises and lowers with the same precision on day one as it does on year twenty.

Built for the Space You’re Creating

Every crank table in our collection is made to order. Tabletop dimensions, steel finish, wood species, and column height range are all specified during your commission conversation. Whether you’re furnishing a private home office, a boardroom that doubles as a dining room, or a creative studio that demands flexibility, the table is built to your exact requirements — not pulled from a warehouse.

Our crank tables are available in natural patina, black patina, and painted steel finishes. Wood options include walnut, white oak, maple, and reclaimed hardwoods. No two tables are identical. That is the point.

Why Hot-Rolled Steel

Hot-rolled steel carries a natural surface character — mill scale, subtle texture, directional grain — that cold-rolled and powder-coated steel cannot replicate. We hand-select every piece of steel for its individual character before it enters our shop. The result is a table that looks like it was made, not manufactured.

This is the material that built American industry. We think it belongs in the spaces where you do your best work.

Where It Started

In 2011, Greg Hankerson designed The Original Crank Desk — one of the first hand-crank height-adjustable tables brought to the US residential and boutique commercial market. Built in Phoenix from hot-rolled steel and solid hardwood, it predated the electric sit-stand boom and established the mechanical crank table as a category in its own right. Every crank table we build today traces its lineage to that original design.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the crank mechanism work?+
The crank column is a structural steel element integrated into the base — not a retrofit or add-on. A hand-operated crank at the side of the column raises and lowers the tabletop through a precision gear system. It operates smoothly at any weight within the rated load range and requires no electricity or batteries.
What height range do your crank tables adjust to?+
Height range is specified during your commission conversation and built to your requirements. Standard ranges typically span seated to standing height, but we build to your space and use case. If you have specific height requirements, include them when you begin your commission.
Can I use a crank table as a dining table?+
Yes — many of our crank tables serve as both dining and work surfaces. The ability to adjust height makes them ideal for spaces that need to function as a dining table at meal times and a standing work surface or conference table at others. We will confirm the best configuration for your use during the commission process.
What steel finishes are available?+
Our crank tables are available in natural patina (the raw hot-rolled steel surface, sealed), black patina, and custom painted finishes. Each finish is applied by hand in our shop. Natural patina develops subtle character over time; black patina gives a darker, more uniform appearance while retaining the steel texture.
What wood species do you offer?+
We work primarily in walnut, white oak, maple, and reclaimed hardwoods. Each slab is hand-selected for figure, grain, and density. If you have a specific species in mind, mention it when you begin your commission and we will let you know what is available.
What is the lead time for a custom crank table?+
Current lead time is 8 to 12 weeks from commission confirmation. This reflects the time required to source materials, fabricate the steel base, finish the wood, and assemble and quality-check the completed piece before it ships.
How is delivery handled?+
Standard delivery is freight curbside. White glove service — inside placement, unpacking, and full assembly — is available; delivery method is confirmed during your commission conversation.
Do you ship nationwide?+
Yes. We ship crank tables to all 48 contiguous states. Freight delivery is coordinated through our logistics partners and scheduled directly with you.
