2 upper doors with woven wire mesh — remotes work through them. Unlike mass-market MDF consoles that trap heat, the steel construction and wire mesh doors of the Ellis provide passive heat dissipation, protecting high-end receivers and gaming systems from thermal throttling. 2 lower doors with solid steel fronts. Wood drawers and matching top, hand-selected for grain. Available in walnut, white oak, cherry, mahogany, and maple. The interior layout is fully configurable — shelving, drawers, hanging rods, and cubbies can be combined and positioned to suit your components and storage needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this suitable for daily use?+
Yes. The top and base are finished with a restaurant-grade sealer built for all-day, everyday use. The steel base is engineered to industrial tolerances, a grade above both commercial and residential furniture. These aren’t display pieces — they’re built for the factory floor, refined for the room.
What interior configuration options are available?+
Interior layout is fully customizable — shelving, drawers, hanging rods, and cubbies can all be combined and positioned to suit your components and storage needs. Details are finalized during the commission conversation.
Can I choose the door style?+
Yes. Wire mesh, glass, solid panel, and open configurations are all available. Door style is selected during the commission process.
What wood species are available?+
Standard species are walnut, white oak, cherry, mahogany, and maple. All tops and drawer fronts are solid, premium, sustainably sourced hardwood, hand-selected for figure and grain. Other species are available on request.
What steel finish options are available?+
Natural steel, blackened steel, and aged paint finish are standard. Custom paint and color matching are available — finalized during your commission conversation.
How much does it weigh?+
Approximately 225 lbs — a reflection of the steel and solid hardwood construction. The 6″ swiveling locking casters make repositioning straightforward despite the weight.
Does it require wall-anchoring?+
At 225 lbs it’s self-stabilizing, but we recommend wall-anchoring all freestanding pieces as a precaution. Pre-drilled holes are included — appropriate fasteners depend on your wall material and are not included.
What is the lead time?+
Lead times are typically 12 weeks or more from deposit, depending on configuration. Your specific timeline is confirmed at the start of your commission.
How is it delivered?+
Standard delivery is freight curbside. White glove service — inside placement, unpacking, and full assembly — is available; delivery method is confirmed during your commission conversation.
What’s the history behind the Ellis design?+
The Ellis line originated with Greg Hankerson’s first original design, built in his Phoenix garage in 2009 — inspired by an early 1900s French industrial cabinet built for the SNCF railway. The Large Ellis is a direct evolution of that original piece, scaled for clients who need the same character and construction in a larger footprint.
I’ve seen something that looks exactly like this on another site. Is it the same piece?+
No. Vintage Industrial designs have been copied extensively since 2009, primarily by Asian manufacturers selling through direct-from-China storefronts. The pieces look similar in photos but weigh a quarter of what ours do — they’re not designed to last, they’re designed to sell at a cheap price. Vintage Industrial sells direct only, through retro.net. We have no other sales channels, no third-party retailers, no Amazon storefront. If you’re seeing something like this anywhere else, it’s a counterfeit. Every Vintage Industrial piece is built to order in our Chicago shop by hand, from hot-rolled steel and solid hardwood, with a 12+ week lead time.
