Designed by Greg Hankerson in 2009 — one of the first pieces ever built at Vintage Industrial. The Ellis draws its DNA from an early 1900s French industrial cabinet built for the SNCF railway, where an unknown craftsman spent considerable time engineering something genuinely distinctive: angle iron molding, precisely fitted, that gave the piece a structural character most furniture never attempts. That detail became the Ellis. Hot-rolled steel frame with angle iron molding, large iron rivets, and a lower cabinet with a cloverleaf screen door that keeps your remotes working with the doors closed. Wiring access through the rear. Available in your choice of steel finish, wood species, and interior configuration.

Visit our Ellis gallery for more configurations.

Description

48″ W × 20″ D × 32″ T

6″ cast iron wheels make it easy to reposition. Solid hardwood top, hand-selected for grain. The latch shown in earlier photos has been updated — current production uses an improved mechanism.

The Boxcar Industrial Bar Cart pairs naturally with this piece — built to matching steel and hardwood specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this suitable for daily use?+
Yes. The top and base are finished with a restaurant-grade sealer built for all-day, everyday use. The steel base is engineered to industrial tolerances, a grade above both commercial and residential furniture. These aren’t display pieces — they’re built for the factory floor, refined for the room.
What interior configuration options are available?+
Interior layout is fully customizable — hanging rods, hooks, shelving, and cubbies can all be combined and positioned to suit your storage needs. Configuration details are finalized during the commission conversation.
Can I choose the door style?+
Yes. Wire mesh, glass, solid panel, and open configurations are all available. Door style is selected during the commission process.
What wood species are available?+
Standard species are walnut, oak, mahogany, and cherry. All tops are solid, premium, sustainably sourced hardwood, hand-selected for figure and grain. Other species are available on request and finalized during your commission conversation.
What steel finish options are available?+
Natural steel, blackened steel, and aged paint finish are standard. Custom paint and color matching are available — finalized during your commission conversation.
Does it require wall-anchoring?+
We recommend wall-anchoring all tall freestanding pieces. Pre-drilled holes are included for securing to the wall — appropriate fasteners depend on your wall material and are not included.
What is the lead time?+
Lead times are typically 12 weeks or more from deposit, depending on configuration. Your specific timeline is confirmed at the start of your commission.
How is it delivered?+
Standard delivery is freight curbside. White glove service — inside placement, unpacking, and full assembly — is available; delivery method is confirmed during your commission conversation.
I’ve seen something that looks exactly like this on another site. Is it the same piece?+
No. Vintage Industrial designs have been copied extensively since 2009, primarily by Asian manufacturers selling through direct-from-China storefronts. The pieces look similar in photos but weigh a quarter of what ours do — they’re not designed to last, they’re designed to sell at a cheap price. Vintage Industrial sells direct only, through retro.net. We have no other sales channels, no third-party retailers, no Amazon storefront. If you’re seeing something like this anywhere else, it’s a counterfeit. Every Vintage Industrial piece is built to order in our Chicago shop by hand, from hot-rolled steel and solid hardwood, with a 12+ week lead time.
What’s the history behind the Ellis design?+
The Ellis was Greg Hankerson’s first original design, built in his Phoenix garage in 2009. It was inspired by an early 1900s French industrial cabinet that had been in service with the SNCF railway — a piece where an unknown craftsman put real thought into the angle iron molding, giving it a structural character that set it apart from anything utilitarian. That molding detail became the defining element of the Ellis. It was also the first Vintage Industrial piece to be extensively copied, within six months of its introduction — a distinction that hasn’t changed.

  1. Very Impressed

    Larry

Hi Greg. I just got my Ellis console and I am very impressed! I’ve been furnishing this house for a few months now and, being picky, I usually have to settle for “close enough”. The piece you made is absolutely spot-on, exactly as I ordered and with the just the right amount of factory-look patina. There was a paper tag on it listing Heath as the craftsman – please pass my compliments along to him. I’ll be in contact soon regarding the side table I mentioned, and I also think I’ll be ordering my dining room items from you as well. Thanks for everything and I look forward to doing business with you again. Larry

  2. Excellent craftsmanship

    Laurie

We got two pieces from Greg–a 308 bookshelf and a media console. Both are absolutely beautiful! Excellent craftsmanship. And to make it even better, Greg is a pleasure to do business with. We could not be happier with our furniture.
