A wide-format, low-profile console built on the Ellis Boxcar frame — the same hot-rolled steel construction, hand-applied molding, period-correct hinges, and solid-roll casters as the rest of the Ellis family, now configured for scale. Modular by design: string as many sections together as your wall allows. Heights from 24″ to 48″. Depth from 18″ to 30″. Door inserts in woven wire mesh, glass, or solid steel. Solid hardwood tops and shelves in mahogany, white oak, walnut, or maple. Every dimension, every finish, every configuration built to your spec.

Description

The Boxcar Ellis Media Console is the wide-format, low-profile expression of the Ellis Boxcar family. Same hot-rolled steel frame, same hand-formed molding and trim, same period-correct hinges and solid-roll casters — built long and low to command a wall, anchor a living room, or serve as a media or storage centerpiece at any scale.

It is modular by design. Sections connect and extend so the console runs as wide as your space requires — three sections, five sections, more. Each section maintains the same proportions and detailing so the finished piece reads as one continuous unit regardless of width.

Door inserts are chosen at commission: woven wire mesh, glass panels, or solid steel. Open sections can be mixed with closed cabinet sections across the same run. Steel finishes include natural steel, blackened steel, and aged paint finishes — each applied by hand. Custom painted finishes are available.

Tops and shelves are hand-selected solid hardwood — mahogany, white oak, walnut, or maple. Steel tops and shelves are also available. Interior LED lighting can be added to any section.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the modular system work?+
The console is built from individual sections that connect side by side. You choose the number of sections, and we build each one to connect seamlessly into a single continuous unit. There is no practical width limit — the run is determined by your wall.
What heights are available?+
Standard heights are 24″, 30″, 36″, 42″, and 48″. If your space requires something different, bring it to the commission conversation and we will engineer accordingly.
What door insert options are available?+
Door inserts are available in woven wire mesh, glass panels, or solid steel. These can be mixed across sections — for example, glass cabinet sections flanking an open center section.
Can I mix open and closed sections?+
Yes. Open shelving sections and closed cabinet sections can be combined in any configuration across the run. Layout is confirmed during your commission conversation.
What steel finishes are available?+
Natural raw steel, hand-applied patina, and matte black are standard. Custom painted finishes are also available, including color matching.
Can LED lighting be added?+
Yes. Interior LED lighting can be integrated into any section — useful for display or media equipment illumination. Wiring and placement are confirmed during commission.
What is the lead time?+
Lead time is 12 or more weeks from commission confirmation. Delivery method — freight curbside or white glove inside placement and assembly — is confirmed during your commission conversation.
I’ve seen something that looks exactly like this on another site. Is it the same piece?+
No. Vintage Industrial designs have been copied extensively since 2009, primarily by Asian manufacturers selling through direct-from-China storefronts. The pieces look similar in photos but weigh a quarter of what ours do — they’re not designed to last, they’re designed to sell at a cheap price. Vintage Industrial sells direct only, through retro.net. We have no other sales channels, no third-party retailers, no Amazon storefront. If you’re seeing something like this anywhere else, it’s a counterfeit. Every Vintage Industrial piece is built to order in our Chicago shop by hand, from hot-rolled steel and solid hardwood, with a 12+ week lead time.
