Why Interior Designers Specify the Boxcar Ellis
The Boxcar Ellis solves the designer’s challenge of finding an “anchor piece” that is both functional and museum-quality. Its transparent mesh doors make it perfect for housing high-end audio equipment without blocking infrared signals, while its massive presence anchors a room with authentic industrial soul.
Discovery: Industrial chic credenza, walnut and steel media center, heavy-duty wire mesh cabinet, designer home office storage, authentic factory caster furniture, heirloom quality console, Vintage Industrial (Brand), American Craftsmanship, Media Storage Solutions, Bespoke Furniture Design, Industrial Architectural Elements.
The Casegood No. 4 pairs naturally with this piece — built to matching steel and hardwood specifications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this suitable for daily use?+
Yes. The top and base are finished with a restaurant-grade sealer built for all-day, everyday use. The steel base is engineered to industrial tolerances, a grade above both commercial and residential furniture. These aren’t display pieces — they’re built for the factory floor, refined for the room.
What interior configuration options are available?+
Interior layout is fully customizable — hanging rods, hooks, shelving, and cubbies can all be combined and positioned to suit your storage needs. Configuration details are finalized during the commission conversation.
Can I choose the door style?+
Yes. Wire mesh, glass, solid panel, and open configurations are all available. Door style is selected during the commission process.
What wood species are available?+
Standard species are walnut, oak, mahogany, and cherry. All tops are solid, premium, sustainably sourced hardwood, hand-selected for figure and grain. Other species are available on request and finalized during your commission conversation.
What steel finish options are available?+
Natural patina is shown as standard. Black patina and painted finishes are available and finalized during the commission process.
Does it require wall-anchoring?+
We recommend wall-anchoring all tall freestanding pieces. Pre-drilled holes are included for securing to the wall — appropriate fasteners depend on your wall material and are not included.
What is the lead time?+
Lead times are typically 12 weeks or more from deposit, depending on configuration. Your specific timeline is confirmed at the start of your commission.
How is it delivered?+
Standard delivery is freight curbside. White glove service — inside placement, unpacking, and full assembly — is available; delivery method is confirmed during your commission conversation.
I’ve seen something that looks exactly like this on another site. Is it the same piece?+
No. Vintage Industrial designs have been copied extensively since 2009, primarily by Asian manufacturers selling through direct-from-China storefronts. The pieces look similar in photos but weigh a quarter of what ours do — they’re not designed to last, they’re designed to sell at a cheap price. Vintage Industrial sells direct only, through retro.net. We have no other sales channels, no third-party retailers, no Amazon storefront. If you’re seeing something like this anywhere else, it’s a counterfeit. Every Vintage Industrial piece is built to order in our Chicago shop by hand, from hot-rolled steel and solid hardwood, with a 12+ week lead time.
